Affirmative Prayer: Remembering the Divine Presence Within

There are moments in life when we simply need someone to pray with us. Perhaps we are facing a difficult decision, worrying about someone we love, experiencing loss, seeking healing, or simply longing for a greater sense of peace. We may not know what to say or even what to ask for. At Unity, prayer does not require perfect words.

It begins by remembering that God is already present.

What Is Affirmative Prayer?

In Unity, we practice affirmative prayer.

Many of us grew up thinking of prayer primarily as asking God to change something: Please fix this. Please make this happen. Please take this problem away.

Affirmative prayer approaches prayer differently.

Rather than seeing God as distant and asking the Divine to intervene, we begin by recognizing that the presence of God is already here—within us, around us, and active in our lives.

We turn our attention away from fear and toward spiritual truth.

Instead of praying from “Something is wrong,” we might begin with:

Divine wisdom guides me.

Instead of “Please give me strength,” we affirm:

The strength of Spirit is within me, and I have all that I need for this moment.

Instead of “Please bring me peace,” we might affirm:

The peace of God is present within me now. I breathe, become still, and rest in that peace.

This doesn't mean we deny the very real challenges of being human. Affirmative prayer isn't pretending that everything is perfect.

It means we choose not to let our circumstances be the only truth we can see.

Prayer Changes Our Awareness

Unity teaches that prayer isn't about changing God. Prayer changes us.

As we become still, breathe, release our fear, and turn our attention toward the Divine, something within us can shift.

We may discover peace in the middle of uncertainty.

We may recognize strength we didn't know we had.

We may receive an idea, a new perspective, or the courage to take the next step.

Sometimes our circumstances change.

Sometimes we change within our circumstances.

Both can be powerful answers to prayer.

The Unity Five-Step Prayer Process

Unity teaches a simple five-step process that can help us move into affirmative prayer:

1. RelaxBreathe deeply. Release tension and become aware of the presence of God within and around you.

2. ConcentrateFocus your thoughts on a divine quality such as love, peace, wisdom, strength, life, or wholeness.

3. MeditateBecome still. Move beyond the words and rest quietly in the awareness of the Divine.

4. RealizeRecognize that the qualities of God you seek are already available within you. Listen for guidance and allow a deeper spiritual knowing to emerge.

5. Give ThanksClose in gratitude—not because you know exactly how everything will unfold, but because you trust that Divine Presence is with you and within you.

Prayer becomes less about convincing God to act and more about awakening ourselves to the presence, possibilities, and spiritual resources already available to us.
