The Five Principles

What Does Unity Believe? The Five Principles for Living a Spirit-Led Life

If you’re new to Unity, you may wonder: What exactly does Unity believe?

It’s a wonderful question—and the answer may be a little different from what you expect.

Unity is a positive, practical approach to spirituality that honors the teachings of Jesus while also recognizing the wisdom found in many of the world’s spiritual traditions. We believe there are universal spiritual truths that connect us rather than divide us.

At Unity, you won’t be asked to accept a rigid set of doctrines or told that everyone must experience God in the same way. Instead, you are invited to explore, question, pray, meditate, and discover what resonates with you on your own spiritual journey.

Some people are comfortable with the word God. Others may use Spirit, Divine Love, Infinite Intelligence, the Universe, or the Divine. Unity teaches that behind these different words is one sacred Presence—the source of goodness, love, wisdom, peace, and life.

At the heart of Unity teachings are Five Principles that offer a simple framework for understanding who we are and how we can live more consciously.

1. God Is Present Everywhere

God is not distant or separate from us. Divine Presence is here, now, within and around us and throughout all creation.

This means we don't have to search somewhere outside ourselves to find the sacred. We can experience God in prayer and meditation, but also in nature, relationships, music, acts of kindness, moments of stillness, and everyday life.

Even during difficult times, we can return to the awareness that we are never outside the presence of the Divine.

2. There Is Divinity Within Every Person

Unity teaches that human beings are inherently good because we are expressions of Spirit.

This doesn't mean that we always make perfect choices. It means that beneath our fears, mistakes, wounds, and struggles, there is something within us that remains whole and sacred.

We often describe this as the Christ within—the divine potential that Jesus so fully demonstrated.

And if that divine light is within us, it is also within everyone we meet.

Imagine how differently we might treat ourselves—and one another—if we remembered that.

3. Our Thoughts Have Creative Power

Our thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes help shape how we experience life.

This doesn't mean we should blame ourselves when painful or difficult things happen. Rather, Unity invites us to become aware of the thoughts we repeatedly hold and recognize that we have the ability to choose a new perspective.

Instead of continually affirming I can't, we can begin asking, What is possible?

Instead of allowing fear to have the final word, we can practice returning to faith.

Instead of believing that our past determines our future, we can choose again.

Changing our thinking can begin to change the way we experience our lives.

4. Prayer and Meditation Connect Us With the Divine

Prayer in Unity is not simply asking God somewhere "out there" to change our circumstances.

Through affirmative prayer, we seek to align ourselves with the divine qualities already available to us—peace, wisdom, strength, love, abundance, wholeness, and guidance.

Meditation takes us even deeper.

In the quiet, we become still enough to listen.

Prayer and meditation remind us that the Divine isn't something we have to earn or find. The connection is already there. Our spiritual practice helps us become aware of it.

5. We Put Spiritual Truth Into Practice

The fifth principle may be the most important of all:

It isn't enough simply to know spiritual principles. We are called to live them.

Spirituality becomes meaningful when it moves beyond Sunday morning and into Monday afternoon.

It shows up in how we speak to our families, how we treat a stranger, how we respond when we're frustrated, how we forgive, how we serve our community, how we care for ourselves, and how we choose love when fear would be easier.

Unity is about living differently.

A Spiritual Community Where Questions Are Welcome

Unity began in 1889 with Charles and Myrtle Fillmore and grew from a small prayer ministry into a worldwide spiritual movement.

Although Unity has its roots in Christianity, it honors the universal truths found throughout the world's faith traditions. We believe there are many paths to experiencing the Divine, and we welcome people wherever they may be on their spiritual journey.

You don't have to have everything figured out.

You don't have to leave your questions at the door.

And you don't have to believe exactly what the person sitting beside you believes.

You are invited to come as you are—to explore, grow, pray, meditate, serve, connect, and discover more fully the Divine Presence within you.

Perhaps the Five Principles can be remembered simply this way:

God is present.

The Divine is within me. My thoughts matter. Prayer and meditation connect me with Spirit. And I am here to live what I know.

At Unity of the Hill Country, we are learning and practicing these principles together—not with the expectation of perfection, but with an openness to growth, transformation, love, and a deeper experience of the Divine.

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here.
