What Does Unity Teach About Jesus?

If you're exploring Unity for the first time, you may have an important question:

What does Unity believe about Jesus?

Unity has deep roots in Christianity, and the life and teachings of Jesus are central to our spiritual tradition. At the same time, Unity's understanding of Jesus may be different from what you have encountered in other Christian churches.

Rather than asking us simply to believe in Jesus, Unity invites us to explore his teachings and discover how we can live them.

Jesus as Our Way Shower

In Unity, Jesus is often called our Way Shower—one who demonstrated what is possible when a human life is fully aligned with God.

Jesus taught about love, forgiveness, compassion, faith, prayer, abundance, healing, and our relationship with the Divine.

But he didn't simply talk about these things.

He lived them.

Again and again, Jesus directed people toward a deeper relationship with God and toward transformation from within.

Unity looks to his life as an example of what it means to live from a consciousness of love rather than fear, faith rather than limitation, and spiritual awareness rather than separation.

Jesus and the Christ

Unity makes an important distinction between Jesus and the Christ.

Jesus was the man who lived and taught more than 2,000 years ago.

The Christ refers to the divine nature or spiritual potential that Jesus expressed so completely—and Unity teaches the Christ

is also present within each of us.

This is sometimes called the Christ within.

It doesn't mean that we believe we are Jesus. Rather, it means that the same qualities Jesus demonstrated—love, wisdom, compassion, peace, forgiveness, courage, and an awareness of oneness with God—are qualities we can awaken and express in our own lives.

Jesus showed us what living in deep awareness of the Divine can look like.

The Kingdom of God Within

One of the ideas emphasized in Unity is Jesus' teaching that the kingdom of God is within and among us.

Our spiritual journey, therefore, isn't only about reaching something someday in the future.

It is also about awakening right here and right now.

Can I experience more peace today?

Can I choose forgiveness?

Can I see the Divine in another person?

Can I respond to fear with faith?

Can I love when loving is difficult?

Can I become still enough to hear the wisdom within me?

These are not merely theological questions.

They are invitations to practice the teachings of Jesus in everyday life.

What About the Bible?

Unity honors the Bible as sacred scripture and an important source of spiritual wisdom.

We also recognize that scripture can be understood on more than one level.

Along with its historical meaning, Unity often explores the Bible metaphysically—asking what a person, place, story, or event might represent within our own spiritual journey.

A biblical story can therefore become more than something that happened long ago.

It can become a mirror.

We might ask:

Where am I in this story?

What fear am I being asked to overcome?

What needs to be forgiven?

Where is faith calling me forward?

What spiritual truth is trying to awaken within me?

In this way, the teachings of Jesus remain alive and relevant to the lives we are living today.

Following Jesus Through Practice

Perhaps one of the simplest ways to understand Unity's approach to Jesus is this:

We seek not only to admire his life, but to practice his teachings.

When we forgive, we practice.

When we pray, we practice.

When we serve someone in need, we practice.

When we choose compassion instead of judgment, we practice.

When we recognize the sacred worth of another human being, we practice.

When we become quiet and listen for Divine guidance, we practice.

And when we choose love in a moment when fear might have been easier, we practice.

Spirituality becomes something we live rather than simply something we believe.

An Invitation to Discover for Yourself

Unity doesn't ask you to leave your questions at the door.

You may have a lifelong relationship with Jesus.

You may be rediscovering Christianity after many years away.

You may understand Jesus differently than you once did.

Or you may simply be curious about what his teachings might offer your life today.

There is room for exploration.

At Unity of the Hill Country, we seek to create a spiritual community where we can learn from the wisdom and example of Jesus while discovering the Divine Presence within ourselves and one another.

Because perhaps one of the most powerful ways we can honor the teachings of Jesus is not simply by talking about love—

but by becoming more loving.
